En 1965, seis adolescentes tonganos decidieron embarcarse en una aventura que cambiaría sus vidas para siempre. Robaron un barco y, tras una feroz tormenta, terminaron varados en la deshabitada isla de Ata en Tonga. Lo que podría haber sido una historia de desesperación y conflicto, como la narrada en Lord of the Flies, resultó ser un testimonio de cooperación, ingenio y resiliencia. A lo largo de 15 meses, estos jóvenes sobrevivieron en condiciones extremas, construyendo una pequeña civilización de la nada.
Durante su estancia en la isla, crearon un huerto para alimentarse, idearon un sistema para recolectar agua de lluvia, construyeron una casa y mantuvieron una hoguera encendida sin descanso. No hubo divisiones ni luchas internas, como predijeron las ficciones apocalípticas de la época; al contrario, estos chicos demostraron que el trabajo en equipo y la solidaridad pueden superar incluso las pruebas más duras.
El fotógrafo John Carnemolla, quien los acompañó de regreso a la isla en 1966, capturó imágenes conmovedoras que documentan su tiempo allí: desde la pesca que los alimentaba hasta los momentos de creatividad, como tocar un ukelele hecho a mano. A diferencia de la obra de William Golding, en la que la naturaleza humana es retratada como cruel y egoísta, la historia real de los chicos de Ata es una oda a la esperanza y a la capacidad humana de organizarse y prosperar, incluso en las circunstancias más adversas.
